Seven easy steps to return your rental car

Knowing what to expect when returning your rental car can save you time and money and help you avoid bad surprises. Discover seven easy steps to get your car delivered quickly and without any hassle.

The process of returning a rented car can be very fast. It may take a longer time to reach 20, 30 or even 60 minutes in a busy period. Check out these easy tips to make returning your rental car hassle-free, fast.

1) Select a flight path

Make sure you have enough time. Rental companies charge a penalty for the late delivery of cars, so check when the vehicle is returned. You can use online maps to predict how long the journey will take. If you are not sure where to drop the car, contact the rental company. You will find their number on the paperwork for the rental process.

2) Find a nearby gas station

With the used fuel fill policy, you only need to fill up the tank right before you return the vehicle. Keep the receipt in case of any problems.

Most rental operations have a “used fuel fill” policy. This means that the fuel tank is full when you receive the car, and you have to refill the tank before returning the car.

Online maps can help you find a gas station near where you return the car. When filling with fuel, ask for a receipt in case you need to prove that the tank is full.

Other fuel policies such as “pre-purchase” mean that you do not have to return the vehicle fully loaded. To check your fuel policy, review the terms and conditions of your rental or the confirmation email sent to you.

3) Pay attention to road signs

At airports, you may see a ‘Return rental car’ sign. In the event that you do not find any plates telling you where to go, then head to the place where you collected your car.

4) Take pictures of the car

Taking pictures of the vehicle’s condition when it is returned can help clarify matters in the event of any damage issues after the rental period.

Once you park your car safely, take a picture of the fuel and mileage indicator. Then get out of the car and photograph all four sides of the car (front, back, and side). This will be useful if unexpected costs are claimed for any damage, additional mileage, or less fuel than specified.

5) Collect all of your items

Check the trunk of the car, both the front and back pockets and the sides of the car, and make sure that there is nothing under the seats. In addition to your personal effects, it is recommended that you take all the staff’s papers as well. These papers are important in case anything happens later.

6) If the rental company representative is in the parking lot…

Tell the representative that you are ready to hand over the car. We hope that they will check the car with you, give you the paperwork that proves the end of the rental process (often called a “check-in form”) and take the car key from you. Once they are sure everything is in order, they will refund your security deposit (the process can take up to 2 weeks).

7) In the event that a representative of the rental company is not present in the parking lot…

Find the key box to leave your car key in it. The box will bear the name and logo of the rental company. The key box is useful when no employees are present, or the office is closed.

If you cannot see the key box, check the office door if any information or phone number has been left on it.
